From Erasmus to Zlatarov:

The Shared Path to Enlightenment and Europe

The connection between Prof. Dr. Asen Zlatarov and Erasmus of Rotterdam is exceptionally strong on ideological, philosophical, and institutional levels.

1. The Philosophy of Humanism
Both are prominent representatives of humanism, though in different historical contexts:
 - Erasmus of Rotterdam was the "Prince of the Humanists" during the Renaissance. He believed in the power of education, reason, tolerance, and critical thinking. His ambition was to reform society through enlightenment.
 - Asen Zlatarov is often called the "Knight of the Spirit" and the "greatest Bulgarian humanist" of the 20th century. His concept of humanizing science and society directly corresponds to Erasmus's ideas on the value of the human person and peaceful coexistence. He was not just a chemist but a public figure who preached that science must serve humanity and its well-being. His motto was: "Love, Light, and Living Community."
2. Our School: The Direct Institutional Bridge
Our school, bearing Zlatarov’s name, is an active participant in the "Erasmus+"programme. Thus, Zlatarov’s legacy (education and science for the benefit of society) is realized today through international exchange inspired by the traveling scholar Erasmus of Rotterdam.
3. Enlightenment Activities
Erasmus traveled across Europe to spread knowledge and unite scholars. Zlatarov did the same in Bulgaria – he was a tireless lecturer who traveled the country to speak about science, morality, and art. Both believed that a scientist should not remain locked in an office but should be among the people.
4. The Idea of a "Citizen of the World"
Both thinkers transcended national borders:
Erasmus: Traveled throughout Europe, taught in different countries, and believed in a common European cultural identity.
Zlatarov: As a scientist who specialized in Geneva, Grenoble, and Munich, he brought European experience to Bulgaria. He was a convinced pacifist and believed that the progress of one nation is part of the overall progress of humanity.
"Science is power only when it is in the hands of people with pure hearts." In this spirit of Zlatarov, modern students expand their horizons through the "Erasmus" program.

Project Symbols

Project Logo Competition

There was a competition for the project logo. Students had different ideas about the design — some presented the logo as a symbolic sign of the project, others added text, while some created it as a drawing or combined all these elements. The participants focused on creating the most attractive logo that would best represent the project’s identity and values. Each partner school proposed its own logo design and provided a short description. After voting, the logo created by the Bulgarian school was selected as the official logo of the project.

Selection procedure

All schools started a secetion procedure to establish the school teams. The students were invited to apply for the project and take part in the activities. Each school has to select a group of 6- 14 students according to the criteria described in the project application form.
